Second year anniversary of the “PHPEP” by Dr Iraniha
PHPEP – Patient Health Professional Experience Project, started in December 2014. Initially the challenge was to improve the patient experience. But soon I recognized the essential link between patient experience and well-being of our health professionals and enhancement of their experiences at work. During the first year of this project, my intention was to demonstrate a growing problem in our health care system in regards to patient and health professional relationships and their experiences. The problem is not the lack of innovation, new discoveries or high quality of care by any means. On the contrary our medicine has accomplished remarkable advancements over last 150 years and created one of the best and most powerful health care system in the world. But unfortunately, over those years it has turned into a giant, complex system with massive number of policies, procedures, rules and regulations with little or no humanity. The robotic interactions in our health care system has formed a culture of indifference among us and demolished the patient-health professional relationships. Now, the lack of humanity and mistrust among our patients and health professionals are extremely evident.
Advance technology in our health care system
Of course, the advancements in technology in our medicine is essential and the complexity of health care system is unavoidable but the vital question is how to reestablish the humanity in our health care system and rebuild the trust and authentic relationship among the patients and health professionals. The reestablishment of compassion, connection, care and kindness in healthcare system cannot be done by force, new policies, rules and regulations. It has to come from our heart, it has to be genuine and authentic. But how can we motivate our exhausted and disappointed health care professionals to perform their difficult and at times unpleasant duties in an indifferent environment with compassion, care and kindness. It requires different perspective, a new mindset and belief, to see the medical profession as a platform for our personal growth and fulfillment, to recognize the fact that caring of a patient and creating amazing human experience would benefit our personal fulfillment and allow us to flourish, to realize the real angelic value of the medical profession as our purpose in life , to embrace the daily challenges as the unique opportunity to accomplish and serve, and to seek creating authentic connection with colleagues, patients and their families. Last year, PHPEP explored and discussed the subjects related to the personal growth and development. Those subjects emphasized that we have the ability to change our mindset and perspective towards our profession, to improve our resilience towards the diversities and struggles, to enhance our social and emotional intelligence for creating an amazing human connection and relationship and to grow and flourish. It is our choice to see differently and act accordingly to feel more content and fulfill.
Patient Health Professional Experience Project
This year the focus of PHPEP is to inspire the health professional to share their ideas, emotions, the moments of triumph and defeat, sadness and happiness and the stories of compassion, human connection, care and kindness. The acknowledgment of these acts would encourage us to do more, to promote our bond for an incredible cause, to improve our relationship with patients and to enhance humanity at work.
