The Letter of Gratitude to My Profession by Dr Iraniha
I am writing this letter to express my gratitude to my profession, the medical profession that has offered me an incredible opportunity to serve. Becoming a surgeon has been an amazing gift in my life. It has given me identity, brought me humility and pride and enabled me to experience full life.
It feels so great to experience all the possible personal pleasure, to be healthy and achieve personal goals, but contentment in life is not just about personal pleasure, health, success and achievement. It is also related to our life purpose, our relationships and our contributions to life. Altruism and having a purpose in life beyond our personal goals would provide us a deeper and longer sense of fulfillment.
Medical profession has given me purpose, a meaning for life above and beyond myself. It has given me the opportunity to engage and connect with others, solve their problems, heal their illnesses, relive their pain and give them hope. This is absolutely priceless. I am so grateful to be able to wake up and go to work and have the opportunity to change people`s life in a daily basis. Medical profession has changed my perspective to life. It has allowed me to realize our frailty as a human being and the fact that we can’t survive without each other. It has made me more compassionate towards the human race and allowed me to see our commonality. I am so grateful to this angelic profession that has given me the opportunity to be proud but humble at the same time and made me who I am as a human being. I am so thankful to all my colleagues, nurses and technicians who have assisted me as part of an amazing team to care for my patients. I am so grateful to all my patients who trust me with their lives and give me the opportunity and pleasure of caring them in a daily basis. This is an amazing honor and great responsibility.
Life is extremely precious but short. It does not really matter how long you live but it matters how. Life has thought me a remarkable lesson that how you live is not just about you, your needs, your comfort and pleasure, but it is also about others, your relationships and contributions. In this world what better contribution is there than helping and healing other human beings. Medical profession has allowed me to be in that position to serve and give, but it is an immense responsibility and therefore, needs to be performed with authenticity. Medicine for me is not just a job, a carrier or even a profession. It’s an amazing platform to experience life fully. So I am so grateful to be in this journey which has helped me to feel more content even in the midst of my dark days.
Oh, I absolutely love this article!
In a world so pressured by rush and rules, it is an absolute delight to read of someone who can step out of all that busy routine to make time for the truly important things: compassion, connection, and service to others. This is truly an inspiring and beautiful message.
Thank you, Dr. Iraniha!
